Mayor Candidate Profile — James “Jim” DeReus

Question #1: What in your experience, either personal or professional, makes you qualified to serve in the office of mayor?

“A history of consistent leadership both inside and outside of the military. It has been over 35 years since I started USAF basic training at the US Air Force Academy, where the mission is to develop leaders of character. I retired after over 20 years active duty at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. My entire life has been about leadership. I have the experience, skills, and temperament to make the hard calls. I have developed the ability to put teams together, maximize people’s strengths and minimize people’s weaknesses and work with people even when we disagree on some things.”

Question #2: What is your vision for the office of mayor for the next four years?

“My vision is for Del Rio to be a prosperous community with a high Quality of Life. To do this, I will focus on 3 things:

“1. I will work with the entire city council and the city manager to work on policies, processes, and personnel to ensure the city government is as effective and efficient as possible.

“2. I will make the hard decisions necessary to ensure that the city budget is sent on a sustainable path forward.

“3. I will work to develop and promote an environment welcoming to new businesses and economic development. Part of this is to make sure the city staff has the appropriate number of employees and proper training to make sure city processes aren’t restricting the process, where inspections and plan review don’t take and excessive amount of time. The city also needs to be willing to engage with all businesses on possible”
