From staff reports
The Del Rio High School Class of 1984 continued its tradition of giving back to the community by awarding 12 scholarships to local graduating seniors this year.
The awards mark the seventh annual Class of 1984 Memorial Scholarship program, an initiative created to honor deceased classmates while helping local students pursue higher education, said Rosalinda Huffman, a member of the scholarship committee.
Guided by the class motto, “’84 Gives More,” members of the Class of 1984 have remained committed to supporting the community that helped shape them.
This year’s scholarships were presented in memory of three late classmates: Melissa Goodwin, Raul Ortiz and Shay Lott Hale, Huffman said. Family members of each were present during the scholarship ceremony to honor their loved ones and celebrate the accomplishments of the recipients.
The 12 scholarship recipients and the colleges or universities they plan to attend are:
Viktoria Overfelt — Baylor University
Star Salazar — Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
Mayrely Garcia — University of Texas at Austin
Deliamaria Vallejo — Texas A&M University, College Station
Lauren C. Sanchez — Texas A&M University-San Antonio
Alexis Buruato — University of Texas at San Antonio
Layla M. Mendez — Southwest Texas College
Camila A. De Los Santos — University of Texas at Austin
Matias Perez Perales — University of Texas at Austin
Jorge “George” Linan — University of Texas at Austin
Adrian Del Rio — Texas State University
Adrian Lee Martinez Jr. — Southwest Texas College
Class members said the scholarship program reflects their ongoing desire to honor the memories of classmates who have passed away while investing in the next generation of Del Rio students.
Since its inception, the Class of 1984 Memorial Scholarship program has provided financial assistance to dozens of local graduates as they begin their college journeys.
