Officers with the Del Rio Police Department arrested a 32-year-old man on a charge of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 90 East.
According to the police department, officers responded at approximately 5:37 a.m. on July 27 to the area of U.S.
Highway 90 East near Dallas Drive for a major motor vehicle collision.
When officers arrived, they found both drivers conscious and responsive, but both vehicles had sustained significant damage. Based on witness statements and the preliminary investigation, officers determined one of the vehicles had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck another vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 90 East.
Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and evaluated both drivers for injuries.
While speaking with one of the drivers, officers reported detecting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and person. Because of the possibility of injuries sustained in the crash, standardized field sobriety tests were not administered at the scene.
Police said the driver refused to voluntarily provide a blood sample. Investigators obtained a search warrant authorizing the collection of a blood sample, which was taken at Val Verde Regional Medical Center and submitted into evidence.
Following the investigation, officers arrested Francisco Javier Sandoval, 32, and charged him with intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury.
Sandoval was transported to the Del Rio Police Department for processing before being transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility.
