UVALDE, Texas — Southwest Texas College Workforce Training and Development celebrated the graduation of its inaugural dental assistant class July 31, 2026, recognizing 14 graduates who are now prepared to begin careers in the dental profession.
Family members, friends, college administrators, instructors and community partners gathered to honor the graduates during a special graduation ceremony held at the college campus in Uvalde. The event featured remarks from Workforce Training and Development leadership, a keynote address from a local dental professional, presentation of certificates and recognition of student accomplishments.
In welcoming guests, Kristel Sanchez, director of Workforce Training and Development, praised the graduates for their perseverance and dedication throughout the program.
“We are extremely proud of the achievement of these graduates,” Sanchez said. “Since orientation, we could see their determination to succeed. They have shown tremendous commitment, and this accomplishment belongs not only to them, but also to their families and support systems who helped make this journey possible.”
Sanchez also recognized the support of Southwest Texas College administration, the Board of Trustees, clinical partners and Workforce Training and Development staff, all of whom helped launch and support the program.
The keynote speaker, Brianna Vasquez, a registered dental hygienist, encouraged graduates to continue learning throughout their careers and embrace every opportunity to expand their skills.
“Never stop learning,” Vasquez told graduates. “The knowledge you gain and the experience you build throughout your career are things that no one can ever take away from you.”
Special recognition was given to Emily Flores, who was the first student in the cohort to complete all required externship hours.
Receiving certificates during the ceremony were Elias Arredondo, Jaylynn Brooks, Lyza Cabrera, Emily Flores, Keira Henderson, Zenette Lopez, Mallory Lumbreras, Ozzalyn Medina, Alize Ruvalcaba, Ieisha Ruvalcaba, Jessica Shaver, Veronica Ulloa, Valerie Varela and Nicole Velasquez, all of whom successfully completed the program and passed the Texas Registered Dental Assistant licensing examination.
Instructor Jessica Orona, who brought more than three decades of dental assisting experience to the classroom, reflected on the unique significance of teaching the program’s first cohort.
“Watching each of you grow in confidence and skill has been one of the greatest rewards of my career,” Orona said. “You have shown dedication, determination and strength. Continue asking questions, continue growing and always treat your patients with compassion, professionalism and respect.”
Southwest Texas College also recognized its clinical partners, including Community Health Development Inc. and Dr. Alejandro Esquivel of Eagle Pass, whose support provided valuable clinical training opportunities for students.
As the ceremony concluded, college leaders encouraged graduates to continue advancing their education and careers while serving patients and communities across the region.
The dental assistant program is offered through Southwest Texas College Workforce Training and Development and is designed to prepare students with the technical knowledge, hands-on skills and professional credentials needed for entry into the dental field.
The successful completion of the inaugural cohort reflects the college’s continued commitment to providing accessible, affordable workforce training opportunities throughout its service area.
