A 24-year-old Del Rio woman was arrested on an enhanced drunk driving charge early on Oct. 15 following a motor vehicle accident, Del Rio police reported.
Del Rio Police Department Senior Officer Dulce Gonzalez, the department’s public information officer, said Thursday police arrested Ernestina Montejano, 1715 Kings Way, Apt. 1404. Montejano was charged with the offense of driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content over or equal to 0.15, a Class A misdemeanor, Gonzalez said.
She said Montejano was arrested after DRPD Officer Ivonne Carbajal was dispatched to the intersection of West Cantu Road and Veterans Boulevard at 4:47 a.m. on Oct. 15 to respond to a motor vehicle accident that was blocking the roadway.
Carbajal reported when she arrived at the scene of the accident, the two vehicles were still on the roadway.
The vehicles were listed as a maroon Chevrolet four-door passenger car and a white Ford Focus, which had been driven by Montejano. Carbajal reported the Chevy had been driven by a Del Rio resident, identified as Fortunato Hinojosa.
“There were no injuries reported, and the two drivers were apparently the sole occupants of their respective vehicles,” Gonzalez said.
Carbajal reported while she was on-scene, she observed that Montejano exhibited several signs of intoxication, including swaying, difficulty maintaining her balance, slurred speech and the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath and person.
Carbajal reported she administered several standardized field sobriety tests, including the horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN), walk-and-turn and the nine-step walk.
“The woman displayed several signs of intoxication during the tests,” Gonzalez said.
Carbajal reported she took Montejano into custody, and she said Montejano agreed to a breath test, which was performed at the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office.
Carbajal reported the results of those tests as blood alcohol levels of 0.192 and 0.186.
